Every academic year, I am happy to take up to 15+5 advisees. Only students who have taken at least one of my courses before will be considered, and priority will be given to those who:
  • Plan to pursue a career in language/education/policy
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to their academic studies
  • Engage in community-building or peer support

Other qualities that I look for in advisees include: independence, resilience, attentiveness, and creativity.

How to join:
  • Send me an e-mail stating your interest before the first week of September
  • You will be asked to fill out a short online form, showing how you meet the criteria listed above
  • Applications will be reviewed once or twice every year: at the end of August, and at the end of the first week of September if places are still open. You will receive an e-mail soon after the review notifying whether your application is successful or not.
  • Note: I do not take new advisees in the middle of the academic year. Advisees typically stay with the same advisor for at least one full year. If you are my advisee and decide to switch advisor during the academic year, please contact me as soon as possible.

Your rights:
  • Ask for general academic advice (by e-mail or in person)
  • Join advisee gatherings (this is a great opportunity to network with students from other year levels)
  • Request recommendation letters (this service is only provided if I am given at least two weeks to write the letter; if only a signature is required, be sure to contact me at least three days in advance)

Your responsibilities:
  • Check and respond to e-mails regularly
  • Attend advisee gatherings on time
  • When asking for advice and resources, please be considerate of others' space and time
  • In general, work hard and take good care of yourself (you are a young adult now), but do reach out when in need (you don't have to figure things out alone)
